On July 19, 2011 in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, Judge Denny Chin declared that there would be additional time given for settlement negotiations in the case of The Authors Guid et al. v. Google Inc. The suit originated in 2005 when Google began to scan and catalog books in order to make them accessible online. The parties reached a settlement after two years of negotiation that was rejected by Judge Chin because it gave Google significant advantage over competitors.
