On August 2, 2011, Russian investigators reopened the case against former Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who died in prison in Moscow in November 2009. Magnitsky was arrested based on allegations of tax fraud after he implicated Russian police in an embezzlement scandal involving a London-based investment fund. The case was reopened following a ruling by the Russian Constitutional Court that criminal cases filed against dead suspects can be continued. However, the reopened case will not involve an investigation into Magnitsky’s treatment while in prison. Russian then-president Dmitry Medvedev has admitted that Magnitsky’s death resulted from physical abuse rather than the denial of medical treatment by prison doctors.
