On July 28, 2009, the US Senate Judiciary Committee voted 13-6 to recommend the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor for the US Supreme Court. All 12 Democrats on the committee and one Republican voted in favor of the recommendation. On May 25, 2009, US President Barack Obama had nominated Sotomayor for the US Supreme Court. Sotomayor was confirmed by the Senate on August 6, 2009, and was sworn in as the 111th Justice in the history of the US Supreme Court two days later.
